studentLife Blog: God is _______. - Week 2

I’ve grown up in a Christian household my whole life. As someone who struggles with anxiety, I've also been told “Give it to God'' and verses like 1 Peter 5 (Cast your anxiety on him because he cares for you) were engraved into my mind. I took all of this with a grain of salt. I thought I could carry the weight of life myself. As the years went on I had my ups and flows with anxiety however, last year I hit rock bottom. In order to take on life myself I didn’t turn to God I wanted to have control of something myself. What’d I turn to? Eating. I began restricting like crazy and my weight dropped drastically. After almost a year of struggling I broke down and got some help. The recovery process has been hard. When recovery began I thought I could take it on myself but it never seemed to work. In hopes of some strength I began praying. Everything got so much easier. God slowly began FREEING me from my burdens. He wanted to help me. I just needed to reach out to him. At this moment, I reached a point where I finally understood what people meant when I was a child. When I gave all of life’s stress to God I didn’t have to turn to food restriction as a coping mechanism. I could lean on him. God FREED me

A perfect example from the Bible is the story of Zacchaeus.

Zacchaeus was a tax collector who took some of the money for himself. When Zacchaeus heard Jesus was in town, he wanted to see Him. But Zacchaeus was short, and Jesus was always surrounded by a crowd.

So Zacchaeus decided to run ahead of the crowd and climb a sycamore tree. From there he could watch for Jesus. He watched as Jesus drew closer. He held his breath when Jesus stopped right beneath his tree. Then Jesus looked straight up at him!

"Zacchaeus," said Jesus with a smile, "come on down. I want to stay at your house today!"

Zacchaeus hopped down. "You are welcome at my house, Jesus," said the little man with a big smile.

But others grumbled, muttering to each other. "Why does Jesus want to go home with a sinner?" Zacchaeus turned to Jesus and said, "Look, Here and now, I promise to give half of my money to the poor. If I have cheated anyone in taxes, I will pay them back four times that amount."

"Salvation comes to Zacchaeus's house today!" announced Jesus. "For I have come to look for and to seek those who are lost." After this Zacchaeus changed his ways and was FREED from his past because of God!!

Remember, you can be freed to just lean on God and he will help you through all your struggles :)
