studentLife Blog: God is _______. - Week 11

by Miriam Kepner on August 11, 2021

God is super cool.

Have you ever had a jaw-dropping moment where you were like “that was sooo cool!”? I know with the Olympic Games I have. The flips, the dives, the athleticism - I sit on my couch in awe of the level of coolness. We say “cool” a lot throughout our day to day life or at least I do to mean that was amazing, awesome, or to acknowledge a kindness outside of norm. So why am I talking about super coolness and the olympics? The Olympics because I’m slightly obsessed with them right now and coolness because God is Super Cool. We could be here days talking about the reasons for His super coolness but today two stand out to me, His creation and the way He treats us.

Since God created the world we can see parts of His genius in each thing He created. I was just at the zoo a day or two ago and I was astonished at all of the different animals I saw. Each one different, each unique. I couldn’t help thinking what a creative God we have! Take for instance the woodpecker, it can peck into a tree at 12-15mph. With that much pounding it would be expected that the creature would sustain multiple injuries. But God has magnificently designed the woodpecker with more flexible and strong bones to not be affected by any impacts! Isn’t that spectacular! (I would totally suggest looking up more about creation, because it’s pretty amazing)

Since Adam and Eve the population on the earth has grown to approximately 7.8 billion people. And out of that HUGE number there isn’t another one like you! God designed you specially, it says in Psalm 139:13-14, “You alone created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know full well.” God Has placed different abilities and personalities in each of us, making you unique, special and one of a kind! I can promise you there isn’t another one of you out there and that’s unbelievably cool.

I mentioned earlier how I use cool to mean “kindness out of the norm,” and this actually depicts how God treats us. For me, I am a selfish, prideful, and messed up sinner yet God still forgives and loves me. If the norm is getting what you deserve, I’ve gotten the “out of the norm” more than I deserve because of what Jesus has done. But another thing is God allows and welcomes us into His presence. I remember a time a few months ago where it seemed like none of my friends could hang out and where it seemed like all my plans were falling through. Regardless of how accurate this was, I felt like no one cared about how I was doing and that I wasn’t given any attention. However selfish this is, it’s how I felt. Then in an honest conversation with God, I heard His voice saying, “I will... How was your day?” The cool thing about God is He truly cares and shows up in a big way. For me that small voice was the perfect way! Maybe you have been in the same place I was or maybe you are in that place as you read this. But wherever you are today I want to encourage you with Deuteronomy 31:8 which says, “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.” These are the words of Moses to Joshua in the presence of all of Israel when Moses' was appointing Joshua as the next leader. Even though these words were spoken a few thousand years ago they stand true. It’s a command and a promise. A command to end fear, to put to rest the feeling of failure and to put your trust in God and a promise that God will not throw up his hands and say “that’s it, I’m done.”

This week I challenge you to reflect on how cool and amazing God truly is! Maybe that looks like writing down all the things He’s done for you/spoken to you or maybe that’s learning more about his creation. Stand in awe of Him today. As I conclude let me end with a thought inspired by a speaker I once heard. How amazing is it that the God of the universe, who created a billion stars, thousands of creatures, and makes the sun rise each day knows you, YOU by name. That’s the definition of cool to me!
